Nanotechnology Colloquium
Colloquium Date: Monday, July 14, 2008

A bi-weekly event to present and discuss issues related to developments, applications and commercialization of nanotechnology.

"M3DŽ Aerosol-Jet Printing - 5 microns to 5 millimeters "

Dr. Michael Renn
Director of the Advanced Applications Laboratory at Optomec, Inc.

(VIDEO CONFERENCED FROM MINNEAPOLIS VIDEOCONFERENCE CENTER)

Abstract:

Optomec's M3DŽ Aerosol-Jet system is an additive manufacturing solution that can produce fine features without the need for masks or resists. The resulting functional line widths are as small as 5 microns and as large as 5 millimeters. Optomec's M3DŽ system has been used in the areas of solar cell manufacturing, electronics, fuel cells, and life sciences. The presentation will describe how M3DŽ works and some of the applications where it has been successfully used.

Bio: Dr. Michael Renn

Dr. Renn is a Senior Research Scientist and Director of the Advanced Applications Laboratory at Optomec, Inc. He holds a B.A. in physics and mathematics from Lawrence University and a Ph.D. in physics from the University of Virginia. Prior to joining Optomec, Dr. Renn was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Colorado's JILA institute and a faculty member at Michigan Technological University. Dr. Renn initially joined Optomec as the PI on a DARPA MICE project that launched the M3DŽ Aerosol-Jet technology. Since then he has been directing the Optomec M3DŽ Advanced Applications Laboratory in St. Paul, MN. Dr. Renn holds more than 20 issued and pending patents related to M3DŽ, and other members of his team hold core expertise in material science, optics, and systems engineering.
