Abstract:

This week's presentation is an overview of highlights and observations from the NanoTxUSA'08 Conference that will have been held on October 2 and 3, 2008. This conference is the largest nanotech conference in Texas this year and is partnering with NanoTech Japan. This year there are five concurrent track addressing nanotechnology and the opportunities of business development. There are panels on "Workforce Development", "Commercialization", and "NANO-SAFETY and Risk Management". The exhibits this year include a special Israeli Pavilion featuring a number of emerging technology businesses. This presentation will also feature a few of the novel topics raised at the conference.Applications include nano-based sensors for detecting explosives, toxic gases, nerve agents and human stowaways in cargo shipping containers; neutron and gamma ray generators using carbon nanotubes for standoff detection of Special Nuclear Materials; nanophase titanium dioxide-based applications for the protection from biological attacks and nanocomposites to endure harsh environments such as that encountered by underwater surveillance devices. This session will give audience members a glimpse of the exciting role that nanotechnology plays in the security of our nation.

Bio: Richard Fink, Ph.D.

Dr. Fink is VP of Engineering for Applied Nanotech Inc., in Austin, TX. His current research focus is on electron and ion sources based on carbon nanotubes. He has collaborations with the Department of Homeland Security, the US Air Force, Sandia National Laboratory and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. He currently is inventor or co-inventor of 24 issued US Patents. Dr. Fink co-founded and is active in the Nanomaterials Applications Center (NAC), now at Texas State University - San Marcos. Dr. Fink earned his B.S. degree in Engineering Physics from South Dakota State U. (1981) and an M.S. (1983) and Ph.D. (1988) degree in Physics from the U. of Illinois.

Bio: Walt Trybula, Ph.D., IEEE Fellow &  SPIE Fellow

Walt is the Director of the Nanomaterials Application Center [NAC] at Texas State University and is a Director of the Trybula Foundation, Inc. Dr. Trybula, a technology futurist, has focused his activities on evaluating emerging trends and applications in nanotechnology, mesomaterials, MEMS/NEMS, and semiconductors with an emphasis on feasibility evaluation and profitable business insertion. His NAC efforts have involved collaborative efforts among various academic researchers and emerging technology companies. Several of these companies have already received or are in the process of receiving Texas Emerging Technology Fund [ETF] awards. Two 2008 graduates of the collaborative effort at Texas State University have transitioned to larger facilities in the area. Nanotailor, Inc., is currently in residence at San Marcos.
