Abstract:

Nanoscale engineering is not new. After all, chemists have always been working at an atomic scale. The same set of rules applies over all size scales. Normally, these rules are expressed mathematically, with quantum physics. But no math is necessary to understand concepts behind these rules and the way they determine the properties of materials. The need for math only arises when actual numbers for these properties are desired.

This talk will explain what makes materials act the way they do, and in the process show that there is nothing special about nanostructured materials - they obey the same rules. Recent advances in technology allow us to structure materials at the nanolevel which could not be structured so before. Therefore, naturally, we produce materials with new and exciting properties. Many examples from everyday life will be given. No math required.



Bio: Jan Beck, Ph.D.

Dr. Beck is the Chief Technology Officer of TXL Group. Beck received a BS degree in applied physics, an MS degree in computer science and a PhD in electrical and computer engineering, in, respectively 1999, 2001 and 2004, all from the University of Texas at El Paso. He was employed full time at X-L Synergy from 2004-2007. He currently designs thermoelectric materials to generate electricity from temperature differences.
