"Intersections of People and Technology in Transformative Science"
Dr. Martha Russell
Chairman anAssociate Director of Media X at Stanford University
(VIDEO CONFERENCED FROM AUSTIN)
Abstract:
The intersections of people and technology have produced important cycles of R&D - commercialization - economic growth. As they have progressed, the microelectronics, biotechnology, and internet industries illustrate patterns of alliances and alignment, and they reveal key inflection points that can be anticipated. Martha will describe several intersections of people and technology that may have relevance to nanotechnology. A twelve year network analysis of partnerships and deals in the biotech industry reveals alliance patterns for company survival and growth. The emergence of manpower shortages illustrates counterintuitive results of science policy and funding. The disciplinary impact of interdisciplinary activities highlights gimmes and gotchas in academic research. And new insights on using communication technologies provide direction for assigning resources to the high impact zones of collaborations
Bio:
Dr. Martha Russell,
Dr. Russell, who is the Associate Director of Media X at Stanford University, has worked with technology and business incubators in the US and abroad to develop programs for innovation and technology-based strategies for regional development. Martha has led innovation programs in agricultural sciences, manufacturing, microelectronic and information sciences, and interdisciplinary social sciences for high bandwidth technologies. She has led research programs at the University of Minnesota and The University of Texas at Austin and has consulted internationally on technology innovation for regional development. She organized the Internet2 Sociotechnical Summit in 1999, bringing together social scientists and engineers from Internet2 sponsoring organizations to accelerate experimental activities using the high bandwidth Abilene network and develop a research agenda in high bandwidth communications for the social sciences.
Her market research has provided insights to reduce risks in management decisions, as well as to build and sustain relationships.
