“Nanotechnology Networks and Innovation in Finland”

Dr Eeva Viinikka
Program Director
Nanotechnology Centre of Expertise in Helsinki Region
Culminatum Innovation, Finland

(Videoconferencing from Finland)

Abstract:

The number of nanotechnology companies has grown from 60 to more than 200 during the past few years, and it seems to be growing, in spite of the nano hype curve touchdown. What kind of actions has Finland, recently ranked as number 2 innovator worldwide in Harvard Business Review, been carrying out, and what's next? There are plenty of reasons to be proud, however, one should never feel too comfortable, especially if the population is only 5,3 million.

Bio: Dr Eeva Viinikka

Dr. Viinikka is the Program Director responsible for nanotechnology Centre of Expertise in Helsinki Region. Her PhD thesis considered the behavior of conductive polymers during electrochemically controlled redox processes (Helsinki University of Technology, 1999, scientific publications in JEAC using last name Lankinen). After the academic research further experience was gathered in Okmetic OYJ, a silicon wafer manufacturer and a worldwide market leader for MEMS wafers. In Okmetic she was responsible e.g. for various tailoring projects in technical customer support and developing new products for MEMS industries. Dr. Viinikka has been running the Nanotechnology Centre of Expertise in Helsinki Region since 2007. The Centre's mission is to support the growth of nanotechnology know-how related businesses, and it provides networking, matching, promoting and project building services to the nanotechnology stakeholders in Finland metropolitan area. Dr. Viinikka will be coordinating the Finnish Nanotechnology Cluster programme starting 2011 www.nanobusiness.fi
