Abstract:
Nano graphene platelets (NGPs), one of the newest graphene solutions, have demonstrated unique mechanical, thermal and electrical properties. NGPs were recently found to exhibit the highest intrinsic strength (130 GPa), and highest thermal conductivity (5,300 W/m-K) when compared to other nanomaterials including carbon nano-tubes (CNTs) and carbon nano-fibers (CNFs). Yet NGPs can be more readily mass-produced and are available at much lower costs. For many manufacturers, understanding how graphene can benefit their industry and how the material might be used in existing or new products can be challenging. In this session, manufacturers will gain a practical comprehension of nano graphene, its performance characteristics and the forms it comes in. Real world examples will also be provided about how NGPs can be used in a wide range of applications including conductive composites, renewable energy, fuel cells, Lithium-ion batteries, electromagnetic interference (EMI),
radio frequency interference (RFI), and electrostatic discharge (ESD).
Bio:
Bor Z Jang, Ph.D.
Dr. Jang is a material physicist, inventor and entrepreneur with more than 25 years experience in research, development, and commercialization of advanced materials, rapid prototyping technologies, nano materials, energy storage and conversion technologies. After co-founding Nanotek Instruments in 1997, Dr. Jang led his team in the development of a new class of nano material now commonly referred to as nano graphene platelets (NGP). NGPs provide a cost effective, high performance alternative to carbon nanotubes. In 2007 Dr. Jang and Dr. Aruna Zhamu co-founded a graphene-manufacturing company, Angstron Materials, LLC. Angstron is the world's largest manufacturer of pristine and oxidized graphene and the only company able to produce quantities of single layer graphene. Dr. Jang has more than 200 scientific papers and 100 plus inventions (15 related to batteries) to his credit. He holds over 100 patents issued or pending. A Fulbright Scholar, Dr. Jang's honors include the 2003 and 2006 Space Technology Award sponsored by NASA. He holds a bachelor's degree in Physics from the National Central University in Taiwan. He earned a master's degree and a doctorate in Materials Science and Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Mass.
