A bi-weekly event to present and discuss issues related to developments, applications and commercialization of nanotechnology.
“The NanoSafety Consortium for Carbon”
John C. Monica, Jr.D
Porter Wright Morris & Arthur LLP
(VIDEO CONFERENCED FROM WASHINGTON, DC)
Abstract:
The NanoSafety Consortium for Carbon (NCC) is a group of 12 innovative companies involved in the
commercialization of nanoscale carbon which have banded together to address the potential environmental,
health, and safety (EHS) concerns presented by their products. While NCC intends to address wide-ranging
global regulatory issues presented by their products, its first tangible project is to work with
United States Environmental Protection Agency ("EPA") to develop a mutually agreeable toxicity
testing regime for a representative set of nanoscale materials in order to satisfy the EPA's
regulatory requirements for new chemical substances under the Toxic Substances Control Act.
NCC has also recruited an independent scientific advisory board made up of top nanotechnology
scientists from around the country who have agreed to help NCC design the proposed testing
regime. John's presentation will describe NCC's purpose, goals, and structure in more detail,
and will also provide an overview of NCC's approach to working with EPA on the proposed toxicity
testing regime.
